Free DIGITAL signals from the air is possible just as it ever was. If you have purchased a new digital tv, you are half way to never spending money on a monthly cable bill again. The part you need now is an antenna. These are now different then the one we used for analog signal, only a bit more high tech, and possibly more weather resistant, then the old aluminum an steel aerials we had in the past. Broadcasters are still sending signal to the air, only now it is digital format, Opposed to analog, thus the need for the hdtv atsc tuner.
This project antenna while a bit crude can be a project for you and your child as a learning experience. The advent of the internet has caused a decline in the Ham radio sector where people learned these techniques as a prerequisite to licensing.
