homemade cb antenna groundplane 102

A home made ground plane for a 102" stainless steel whip antenna built from junk for 11 meter cb side band. For 3 years this 102" antenna set in the corner of the garage when i got the itch to plug in the emperor ts5010 cb radio. Remembering a junk fan and stand out in the local woods i dragged it home to mount the antenna. The 102" whip needs a ground plane to correct swr and push the antenna radiation pattern up. I had once used this antenna before on the roof with copper wire for ground plane radials. A mobile cb antenna like this needs the ground plane to complete the electrical circuit and force the radio signal out of the antenna and not back down the coax to the radio and seen as a high swr. This down and dirty ground plane and Mobile whip antenna is carried on this little trailer to where ever i feel is a nice place, usually a hill. Here it is sitting next to the house where it serves as a base station antenna during cold weather. It is the steel plates that the antenna ground lug contacts that forms the ground plane of a vertical antenna with out reflective elements. Wire radials as the ground plane can also be used of the same length if flayed out from the antenna base at a 45 degree angle. These ground plane radials must also be insulated from the driven element of the antenna at the ground lug. This home made ground plane antenna enjoys a 1:1 swr match or better in the cb or 11 meter band. enjoy ;)
